Google Drive is learning a handy trick from Keep Notes

Summary

  • Google Drive may soon have a new, more convenient menu layout with larger labels in the FAB.
  • An option for Gemini functionality to create summaries of files will be featured in the upcoming update.
  • The changes enabled in version 2.25.180.0.all.alldpi indicate a broader rollout may be imminent.

Late last year, Google Keep Notes got an update that made it significantly easier to create multiple types of notes by tucking the various options into the app’s floating action button (FAB). Now, an APK teardown from Android Authority has found evidence that a similar change could be coming to Google Drive in the near future.

In the current version of the Google Drive app for Android, tapping the FAB — the plus button in the lower right corner — opens a menu containing the various options to add documents to your Drive. The menu slides up from the bottom of the screen, covering about a quarter of the interface.

Android Authority shares that in version 2.25.180.0.all.alldpi of Google Drive, it was able to enable a change in which sheet-style menu will be replaced by a series of buttons that expand out of the FAB. The new menu features larger labels, covers less of the screen, and looks a little more modern overall. Keep Notes later added a setting that allows users to opt out of its expanding FAB menu; we’ll see whether Drive gets a similar option.

Gemini is here, too

In addition to an updated upload menu, Android Authority also found that this upcoming update prominently features Gemini functionality. Alongside options to share, rename, and download your files, the menu exposed when you tap the three-dot icon next to any file now includes an option to have Gemini create a summary of that file.

Again, Android Authority says that it was able to enable these changes in version 2.25.180.0.all.alldpi of the Google Drive app. That that’s possible means these changes may be rolling out more broadly soon.
