Samsung is finally showing interest in Qi2 wireless charging

It’s been over two years since the Wireless Power Consortium announced the MagSafe-like Qi2 wireless charging standard. Like MagSafe, Qi2 introduced the Magnetic Power Profile, allowing devices to align precisely with wireless chargers for faster and more efficient charging. However, despite the standard being available for over a year, no Android OEM has fully adopted Qi2.

Brands like OnePlus and Samsung have released official cases that bring similar functionality, but their phones haven’t officially supported Qi2 charging out of the box yet. Now, it looks like Samsung may finally be preparing to bring Qi2 wireless charging to its phones.

As spotted by Android Authority, Samsung recently posted a survey in the Samsung Members app asking users about wireless charging. Several questions were specific to Qi2, such as whether built-in magnets for wireless charging would be beneficial, and if users would accept a slightly thicker phone to accommodate them.

Samsung seems ready to join the Qi2 party

Another question asked whether magnet-based Qi2 charging would reduce inconvenience if a phone supported only wireless charging. Samsung also asked how often users use their USB-C port and for what purpose (e.g., charging, data transfer).

As with most surveys, this doesn’t confirm any feature — Samsung may simply be gauging interest in Qi2 charging and whether users would accept compromises like added thickness or ditching the USB port. But it’s clear the company is at least seriously considering the idea.

After all, Android users have been asking for Qi2 support on their phones for years. It not only solves typical wireless charging issues but also unlocks compatibility with accessories like external SSDs, ring lights, and more. Google is reportedly considering Qi2 wireless charging for its upcoming Pixel 10, so it’s likely that Samsung is also starting to take the idea more seriously.
