A very popular survival game is finally making its way to PS5 next year

There aren’t a lot of games that Xbox can claim as console exclusives anymore, and it just lost another one. That’s because Valheim is finally coming to PS5.

Valheim is a very popular early access survival game that became a breakout indie hit several years ago, but has only been available on PC and Xbox until now. That’ll change next year.

When will Valheim come to PlayStation 5?

A new trailer for Valheim confirms that the survival game will come to PS5 in 2026. It’s unclear if it’ll launch on PS5 as an early access game or if it will have hit 1.0 by then. There’s currently no word on a PS4 version of the game, even though it is available on Xbox One.

The PS5 version of Valheim will have complete parity with what’s already available on PC and Xbox Series X. According to a post by the developers on the game’s official website, Valheim will even feature full cross-play, which should help those who have dumped hundreds of hours into the game on other platforms help out the new PlayStation players.

While Valheim proper is developed by Iron Gate and published by Coffee Stain Publishing, the PS5 port is being developed by a company called Piktiv. Iron Gate says outsourcing the game will give them more time and resources to bring Valheim to 1.0 and exit early access.

Valheim is a survival game that first entered early access in February 2021. Its Nordic aesthetic and detailed building systems ended up really resonating with players, and it became one of the major video game hits during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. It’s now a big player in the survival game genre alongside Minecraft and Ark.

Although it’s not as ubiquitously popular as it was in 2021, Valheim has continued to see a steady stream of updates in the four and a half years since it became a breakout hit. In 2023, it came to Xbox One and Xbox Series X. But, like most Xbox console exclusives nowadays, the game has inevitably made its way to the more popular PS5 console.

Now, the release of Valheim on PS5 is really rounding out its availability. Iron Gate says another studio handling this port will give them time to focus on the game’s 1.0 update. Hopefully, we’re nearing the light at the end of the tunnel, and Valheim exits early access soon.
